Orange County is 72 miles from the state capital of Richmond, 55 miles from Northern Virginia and the nation's capital Washington DC, and 25 miles from Charlottesville, home of the University of Virginia. The county consists of 355 square miles with elevations ranging from 175 feet above sea level along the Rapidan River to 1200 feet above sea level in the mountains. There are two incorporated towns and a gated residential community.
The economy is one of the region's most diverse, led by agribusiness, manufacturing and commercial/retail services. With over 400 active farms averaging 243 acres each and 20 manufacturing companies employing 1900, Orange County's economic base generates annual payrolls in excess of $130,000,000. Tourism is also an important and growing industry bringing many visitors to the county.
